Why VR Streams Buffer (And How to Fix It)
VR cam streams are significantly more demanding than regular video. A standard 1080p webcam stream uses about 3–5 Mbps of bandwidth. A VR cam stream at the same apparent quality needs 15–25 Mbps because it's rendering a full 360° sphere of video in stereoscopic 3D. At 4K VR quality, you're looking at 40–60 Mbps.

Streaming Quality Settings
Most VR cam platforms let you adjust stream quality. Here's how to choose:
Auto (recommended for most users): The platform automatically adjusts quality based on your connection speed. This prevents buffering but may occasionally drop resolution during network hiccups.
Manual quality settings:
▸ 720p VR: Needs ~10–15 Mbps. Looks decent but noticeably soft. Good for slower connections.

Advanced: Router Configuration

QoS (Quality of Service): Most modern routers have QoS settings that let you prioritize traffic from specific devices. Add your VR headset's MAC address as a high-priority device so it gets bandwidth preference over other devices on your network.
Channel selection: Use a WiFi analyzer app to check which 5GHz channels are least congested in your area, then manually set your router to that channel. In dense apartment buildings, automatic channel selection often picks a crowded channel.
DNS settings: Switch to a fast public DNS like Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) or Google (8.8.8.8). This won't increase bandwidth but can reduce initial connection time and DNS lookup delays.
Bandwidth allocation: If your router supports it, set a minimum bandwidth reservation for your VR headset. Reserving 30 Mbps ensures other devices can't starve your stream.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Stream loads but then freezes: Usually a WiFi stability issue. Move closer to your router, or switch to 5GHz if you're on 2.4GHz. Restarting your router can also help if it's been running for a long time.
Video is blurry/pixelated: The platform is auto-reducing quality due to bandwidth constraints. Check for other devices using bandwidth, or manually set a higher quality if your speed test shows sufficient headroom.
Audio and video out of sync: This is typically caused by high latency or CPU overload on the headset. Close other apps, restart the headset, and ensure you're on a low-latency connection.
Stream works on phone but not headset: Clear the headset browser cache, ensure the browser is updated, and try a different browser if available. Some headset browsers handle certain video codecs better than others.
Everything is smooth but jerky when I move my head: This is a frame rate issue, not a streaming issue. Lower the headset's refresh rate to 72Hz, or close background apps to free up processing power for smoother head tracking.
